Laundry Services

The Correction Enterprises Laundry Industry is a large and complex operation.

Six laundries meet the cleaning needs of the state prisons, as well as several hospitals and state agencies. The laundries process over 25 million pounds of laundry annually.

Prior to 1957, the North Carolina Department of Correction operated a Laundry System which only satisfied the needs of the Department. In 1957, an expansion program began which encompassed not only all of the Department’s needs, but also took care of several county Hospital’s needs.With the expansion, Correction Enterprises successfully negotiated contracts to supply the management and labor for several in-house facilities. Currently the laundry supplies service for over 22,000 beds throughout the State and processing over 28 million pounds of laundry annually.

What is the Umstead Act ?

In general, the Umstead Act (the “Act”) prohibits North Carolina government agencies from competing with the private commercial activities of North Carolina citizens. NC State University and its employees must comply with the Act. The Act specifically prohibits North Carolina government agencies from: Rendering services to the public that are ordinarily provided by private businesses

There are currently six laundries that meet the cleaning needs of the state prisons, as well as several hospitals and state agencies. The laundries are located at Craggy Correction (Asheville, North Carolina), Broughton Hospital (Morgantown, NC), Umstead Hospital (Butner, NC), Central Prison (Raleigh, NC), Cherry Hospital (located in Goldsboro, NC known as Chase), and Sampson Correctional (Clinton, NC).

Craggy Laundry

Asheville, NC

Founded in 1962 on the grounds of the Old Craggy Correctional Facility, Craggy Laundry handles an average of 3.5 million pounds of laundry per year. The 12,400 square foot facility employs a staff of 8 to manage over 55 inmate workers.

Broughton Laundry

Morgantown, NC

Broughton Laundry is located on the historical campus of Broughton Hospital in Morganton, North Carolina. Broughton Laundry process an average of 3.4 million pounds of laundry per year. The 17,000 square foot facility employs a staff of 9 to manage over 50 inmate workers.

Umstead Laundry

Butner, NC

Located on the Historical grounds of the Old John Umstead Hospital Campus, Umstead Laundry handles an average of 2.95 million pounds of laundry per year. The 17,000 square foot facility employs a staff of 8 to manage over 45 inmate workers.

Central Prison Laundry

Raleigh, NC

Founded in 1957, the laundry at Central Prison handles an average of 500 thousand pounds of laundry per year. The 600 square foot facility employs a staff of 2 to manage 10 inmate workers.

Chase Laundry

Goldsboro, NC

Transferred from DHHS to DPS in 2001, Chase Laundry is located on the historical grounds of the old Cherry Hospital grounds Goldsboro, North Carolina Chase Laundry was built in 1978 and named after Nancy Chase who was a Legislator, Humanitarian, Civic Leader and Farmer. The 43,000 square feet facility employs 16 employees and 85 inmate worker producing over 5.5 million pounds of linen annually.

Sampson Laundry

Clinton, NC

Founded in 1971, Sampson Laundry handles an average of 10 million pounds of laundry per year. The 50,000 square foot facility employs a staff of 28 to manage over 200 inmate workers with a second Shift.

The Correction Enterprises employ its own in house Maintenance Department, the laundries operate and maintain a fleet of over 28 tractors, 35 trailers, 11 three ton van trucks and 10 one ton trucks. Combined these vehicles travel 1 million miles (annually) across North Carolina for pick-ups and deliveries.
